Nikola Jakšić can play in the final!
Serbia’s captain, Nikola Jakšić, will play in the European Championship final despite the red card he received in the semifinal against Italy.
Jakšić received a red card and was excluded near the end of the first half against Italy (17:13), which, according to the rules, would normally rule him out of the next match.
Serbia filed an appeal with LEN, which the governing body of European water polo accepted, and the Serbian captain will now have the opportunity to play in the final at the Belgrade Arena.
Jakšić was excluded at the end of the second quarter after hitting an Italian player, who had pushed him underwater with his body.
The referees reviewed the VAR footage and decided to give him a red card, which would normally result in a suspension for the final.
As announced by Serbia’s head coach Uroš Stevanović, officials from the Serbian Water Polo Federation did everything possible to have the suspension lifted so that the teams would compete on equal terms in the big final.
Serbia’s water polo team will play Hungary in the European Championship final on Sunday at 20:30, while Italy and Greece will compete for third place at 17:00.
