Terrorist attack in Belgrade: Israeli Embassy targeted; Red Alert in effect PHOTO
Deputy Prime Minister and outgoing Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said that a terrorist attack was carried out in Belgrade shortly after midnight, targeting a member of the Gendarmerie who was guarding the Israeli Embassy.
Following the attack, authorities ordered the terrorism threat level to be raised to the highest possible level and increased police presence at key locations.
“An underage individual, whose identity has not yet been established and who is reasonably suspected to be from Šabac, attacked a member of the Gendarmerie with two knives while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’,” Dačić said, according to a statement released by the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) this morning.
He added that the Gendarmerie officer neutralized the attacker in self-defense but sustained minor injuries, including a cut to his face from one of the knives used in the attack.
“The investigation is ongoing, and all the details should become known overnight. Given that a terrorist attack took place on our territory, I have, as the minister responsible for internal affairs, raised the terrorism threat level to the highest possible level, known as the red alert,” Dačić explained.
He explained that this would involve increased security checks and a stronger police presence at locations of particular security importance, including critical infrastructure facilities and places where large numbers of people gather.
“I want to reiterate that a member of the Gendarmerie guarding the Israeli Embassy was slightly injured in the terrorist attack carried out last night and neutralized the attacker. Although the attacker’s identity has not yet been established, our security services had been monitoring him, and it is known that he was a supporter of the Islamic State. He had a black flag and the Islamic State insignia on his Instagram profile,” Dačić said.
He added that he had visited the injured Gendarmerie officer together with Police Director General Dragan Vasiljević. The officer is doing well and is expected to be discharged and return home later today.
