Due to the extended weekend and the celebration of the holiday Saints Cyril and Methodius in North Macedonia, large crowds are expected at border crossings.

Next weekend is also expected to be critical for travel to Greece, as North Macedonia will again have a long weekend.

The Day of the Slavic Educators Saints Cyril and Methodius is celebrated on May 24, but since it falls on a Sunday and Monday, May 25 will also be a non-working day. With this extended weekend, many Macedonian citizens are expected to travel to Greece already this afternoon.

As a result, a large number of travelers are expected to take advantage of the holidays for a short trip to the Aegean Sea. When combined with Serbian tourists already heading to early summer vacations, as well as possible additional border checks linked to the new EES system, several-hour delays at border crossings are possible.

Those returning from Greece are advised to avoid Monday, May 25, especially the period from midday to the evening, when delays of several hours are expected.

Another busy period is also expected next weekend.

Namely, Friday, May 29, is also a non-working day in North Macedonia due to the religious holiday Pentecost. As many people are expected to travel to Greece already on Thursday afternoon and evening, heavy congestion can be expected. Then on Sunday, May 31, significant traffic is also expected in the opposite direction, toward North Macedonia.

Evzoni or Dojran – which to choose

Although the Evzoni border crossing is the most common choice among drivers, it also experiences the heaviest traffic and the longest queues.

Dojran is often seen as an alternative, but experts warn that even there, during such extended holiday weekends, significant delays can occur.

The best advice is to check live traffic cameras before departure and follow real-time traveler updates from the border.

In a separate article, you can also find other alternative border crossings with Greece where congestion is typically lower.
