Around 10 members of the Criminal Police Directorate entered the faculty lobby.

The Ministry of Interior had earlier announced that at around 10:40 p.m. last night, following the suspected ignition and burning of pyrotechnic devices on the fifth floor of the faculty, a 25-year-old woman jumped out of a window and died at the scene.

The Special Department for Combating Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade has joined the investigation and, pursuant to Article 282, paragraph 4 of the Criminal Procedure Code, submitted a request to the Anti-Corruption Department of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia to collect necessary information regarding the incident at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade on March 26, 2026, when several sprays and firecrackers were ignited on the fifth floor at around 10:40 p.m., after which a female person jumped from a window onto the plateau in front of the faculty and lost her life.

The request was submitted due to grounds for suspicion of possible negligence by the dean, vice-deans, and the vice-dean for teaching regarding the safety of students and staff at the faculty.

In this regard, the police were instructed to enter the Faculty of Philosophy building due to threats to general safety, life, physical integrity, health, and property, and to promptly examine all circumstances related to the incident. They were also tasked with obtaining all internal regulations of the faculty governing safety, work organization, procedures for entering the building, and working hours.

This was ordered in order to determine whether safety measures at the Faculty of Philosophy were in compliance with these regulations, and if not, to identify the nature of any shortcomings.

It was also ordered to determine whether the faculty had a functional counseling service and protocols in place to assist students in crisis, and whether these mechanisms were accessible to students, as well as whether the deceased— a student—had previously reported psychological issues to the relevant faculty services.

In addition, it is necessary to obtain all evidence on whether the competent services had any knowledge of the victim’s problems and, if so, to establish how the institution acted upon that information, as well as whether the dean, as the executive authority, acted in accordance with the prescribed protocols.

Furthermore, it was ordered to collect all decisions and official acts issued by the dean concerning:

  • Ensuring the physical security of the facility,

  • Adoption and implementation of occupational safety and fire protection measures,

  • Organization of security services and control of access to the faculty building,

  • Responsibility for safety during teaching and extracurricular activities.
