The elections are being held for the president and vice presidents of Republika Srpska, the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the National Assembly of Republika Srpska, the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the House of Representatives of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and cantonal assemblies, RTRS reports.

A total of 518 mandates are being contested among 7,028 certified candidates.

The large number of political entities points to strong competition, while also reflecting the deep fragmentation of the political scene ahead of the elections.

A total of 3,414,364 registered voters are listed in the Central Voters’ Register, including 48,074 voters registered to vote from outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, either by mail or at diplomatic and consular missions.

A total of 48,074 voters are registered to vote from outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, a relatively small number compared with the total number of BiH citizens living abroad. The diaspora, however, represents one of the country’s most significant yet underutilized political constituencies.

The electoral threshold is 3 percent.

Although modern electoral technologies will be used more extensively for the first time in these elections, which should prevent or significantly reduce the possibility of electoral manipulation, the risk of abuses remains.

According to available reports, particular concern centers on the possibility of vote-buying, which analysts consider a serious challenge to the integrity of the electoral process and the credibility of the results.

The elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina are taking place at a time when the European Union expects concrete progress in the country’s European integration process.

In March 2024, the European Council gave the green light to opening accession negotiations and called on the European Commission to prepare the negotiating framework for the start of the talks.

Polling stations will close at 7 p.m.
