Hungarian Gripen fighter jet crashes

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said today that a Hungarian Gripen fighter jet crashed near Szolnok in central Hungary for reasons that are not yet known, and that the pilot ejected successfully.

“For reasons that are still unknown, a Gripen fighter jet of the Hungarian Armed Forces crashed near Szolnok a few minutes ago. The pilot successfully ejected. An investigation is underway, and the Defence Minister (Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi) is on his way to the scene,” Magyar said, according to Portfolio.

He added that there were no injuries or damage to civilian infrastructure in the crash.

Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said in a video posted on Facebook that the pilot was not injured in the crash. 

 

Ruszin-Szendi added that the pilot did everything he could to ensure the aircraft crashed in a safe, unpopulated area.

Hungary’s National Ambulance Service said the pilot’s condition is stable and that he was transported by air ambulance helicopter to a hospital for observation.
