"Chunks of ice" fell from the sky; Chaos in the neighborhood PHOTO/VIDEO

A powerful storm hit southern Istria today, with Rovinj being the worst affected area, where hailstones the size of walnuts fell — a phenomenon rarely seen in the region.

According to initial information, there are also reports of people suffering minor injuries.

"Rovinj — chunks of ice were falling from the sky. We are being told that there are also people with minor injuries. We really do not remember hail this large in Istria," residents of Rovinj wrote on social media.

Istramet also reported that fairly large hail fell in Rovinj and that there were injuries.

Large hail also fell this morning across the wider Sinj and Imotski areas.

Ice fell in Sinj itself, the surrounding area of Imotski, Trilj, Turjaci and Brnaze, causing material damage as well.

The storm hit Croatia after meteorologists issued serious weather warnings.

 

The European Storm Forecast Experiment (ESTOFEX) issued its highest, level-three warning for parts of the region due to the risk of severe thunderstorms.

The greatest risk was forecast from Italy across the central Adriatic to southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo and Metohija, while a level-two warning was issued for the northern Adriatic, including Istria, due to the possibility of very large hail and storm-force winds, Croatian media reported.
