Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Varnavadi, the older sister of Thailand’s king, has joined the race for the country’s next prime minister in an unprecedented move. Thailand’s monarchy has historically been seen as above politics, but Ubolratana, 67, announced on Thursday that she would represent a party associated with two fugitive former prime ministers who have been accused of subverting the power of Thailand’s royal institutions, according to the New York Times. The party’s leader said that they had nominated Ubolratana as she was “an educated and skilled person” who was the “most suitable choice.” A few hours after the announcement, the king made a statement saying that her candidacy was “an act that conflicts with the country’s traditions, customs, and culture, and therefore is considered extremely inappropriate.” The king’s opposition to the move is likely to lead to her disqualification by the election commission, according to the Guardian. On Friday, Ubolratana wrote on her Instagram that she had accepted the nomination and wanted to exercise her rights as a citizen. "I have conducted this action with sincerity and the willingness to sacrifice to have the opportunity to lead the country to prosperity," she wrote. Before the surprise announcement, the frontrunner for the elections was current prime minister Prayut Chan-ocha, who seized power during a military coup in 2014. Prayuth has also announced his candidacy in the elections, which will take place on March 24, after repeated delays by the country's junta 👑🇹🇭 (📷: Getty) - #ubolratana #princessubolratana #princess #princesses #royals #royalty #royalfamily #instaroyals #thairoyalfamily #woman #women #politics #politician #politician #primeminister #pm #thailand #thai #ทูลกระหม่อม #princessubolratanarajakanya #ubolratanarajakanya #thairaksachartparty #พรรคไทยรักษาชาติ #อุบลรัตน #ประเทศไทย #ไทย #ทรงพระสเลนเดอร์ #ไทยรักษาชาติ
