BELGRADE Serbia will assess its relations with countries of the region by taking into account their attitude toward Serbs in the region, a presidential advisor has said. “Serbs are autochthonous and constitutive people in all countries of the former Yugoslavia and great responsibility lies with political leadership of those countries. In our communication with them we will always point out position of Serbs as a priority and we expect to see concrete results in the coming period,” Marko Djuric said. Presidential advisor announces “reciprocity in relations” Djuric added that “the relations with those countries will very much be determined by their attitude toward Serbs living in the region”. At a public hearing dubbed “Political and other rights of Serbs in the region”, held in the Serbian parliament, he said that President Tomislav Nikolic wanted the Serbian institutions to be a solid support and an assembly center for Serbs in the region, “a place they can turn to at any time of day and expect support and help for all their problems”. Djuric pointed out that Serbs in the region had often been victims of political conflicts and political manipulations but that the current government wanted to make the issue of the position of Serbs in the region a national and state issue “that concerns every institution and every political factor”. “The attitude toward Serbs in the region is an attitude toward us. Serbs in the region are a connection with the countries in the region and an irreplaceable bridge of cooperation and we, both as a society and a state, need to recognize the potential our community has,” the president’s advisor explained. According to him, problems regarding the rights of Serbs in the region are problems that need to be solved at an interstate level and cannot be solved without Belgrade’s involvement and unambiguous support. Djuric stressed that he completely supported the idea that it was necessary to intensify the work of the state organs, including the forming of adequate councils, in order to step up efforts aimed at stopping discrimination against Serbs in the region which was “present and obvious”.
