BELGRADE An efficient combat against corruption in Serbia is a good sign for investors but also for citizens and the state, Peter Stano has stated. The EU enlargement commissioner's spokesman explained that combat against corruption had a positive impact on the citizens and the state and that it was one of the most important issues Serbia needed to face in the EU integration process. “Combat against corruption is good for everyone” “In our last report on Serbia’s progress we assessed that, generally speaking, Belgrade is implementing the legal framework for combat against corruption but that it is still present in many sectors, primarily in health and education systems, so it is still a serious problem,” Stano told daily Blic. He added that combat against corruption was a long process that required strong commitment at the highest political level and a consistent, comprehensive and nonselective approach. “It is of utmost importance to have consultations with main institutional players and civil society, with efficient coordination of organs that deal with the implementation of the law, the prosecution and judges,” he was quoted as saying. Stano added that the EU expected efficient actions in prevention and punishment of corruption and that the European Commission (EC) was encouraged by the Serbian government’s political will to tackle corruption and measures it had taken so far. He said the EU monitored the latest corruption investigations and arrests in Serbia but that it did not want to comment on ongoing investigations or on concrete cases. (Beta/AP, file) Blic Tanjug
