PODGORICA About a hundred of Roma whose homes burned down when a fire broke out in a refugee camp headed toward the Montenegrin government headquarters on Wednesday. They are protesting against the fact that they have been given tents as temporary housing after their homes burned down on Tuesday. Montenegro: Roma protest over temporary housing According to vijesti.me news outlet, the protesting Roma are shouting “Thieves” and “We want apartments”. Around 800 Roma families, who fled Kosovo in 1999 lost their homes in the fire that broke out on Tuesday morning. The Red Cross provided 90 tents that were set up last night but the Roma told Beta news agency on Wednesday morning that they wanted a permanent solution. “The temporary housing has lasted for 13 years. If you cannot solve the issue of our permanent housing and provide us something better than shacks and tents, do not deceive us. It is better to shoot us, this is torture,” one of the protesting Roma said. Bureau for Care of Refugees Director Zeljko Sofranac told Beta that “this is necessary” but that it was a short-term solution and that the government was working on providing permanent housing to the Roma. The EU earlier donated EUR 2.5mn for the financing of the permanent housing for the Konik refugee camp residents. The European Council said in a recent report that the camp “de facto represents segregation” and “that living conditions in the camp are inhumane and dangerous”. The cause of the fire is still unknown but police suspect that it broke out due to negligence. (vijesti.me) Beta vijesti.me
