Croatian President Stjepan Mesic says that the “Serbian political elite must take care of the Albanians in Kosovo.” He told A1 Television that “after Milosevic’s brutal aggression on almost all of Yugoslavia, and also Kosovo, cooperation between Serbia and Kosovo should have been expected. However, the Serbian political elite only took care of the Serbs. They have to look after the Albanians in Kosovo as well, and in that manner tie the Albanians to Serbia if they want Kosovo to remain in Serbia.” Mesic: Serbia must look after Albanians Asked how dangerous a partition of Kosovo would be, Mesic said that “it would not be good to partition it.” The Croatian president said that the declaration of Kosovo independence was a "reality", and that Serbia did not have to recognize it if it did not want to, but “it must facilitate communication between people and capital, and have that area function like all other parts of Europe.” Asked about Croatia’s European future, he said that he expected Croatia to become a member of the EU in 2010. “However, that is not our final goal. Our final goal is for all of Southeast Europe, especially the countries of the former Yugoslavia, to join the EU and to open up our borders like France and Germany, who were at war for hundreds of years,” Mesic said.
