Dimitrij Rupel says that Slovenia cannot allow another country to draw its own borders. In a statement released on Thursday relating to relations between Slovenia and Croatia, the Slovenian foreign minister said that his country, in a strategic sense, wanted Croatia to become an EU member as soon as possible, but that Slovenia could not allow Croatia to dictate what its borders would be. Slovenia-Croatia border dispute rumbles on Rupel said that he wanted to meet with Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Jandrokovic within the next several days if possible. He said that he hoped that the problems between Croatia and Slovenia would be resolved as soon as possible, as long as there was good will to do so on both sides. Rupel said that Slovenia had thus far acted in a restrained manner, not wishing to get tangled up in pre-election sentiments in Croatia, but that there had been nothing untrue or exaggerated when he had said before the European Parliament that Croatia had practically severed all relations with Slovenia. The Slovenian foreign minister said that the criticism he had come in for in Croatia over the past few days, while interesting and entertaining for the readers, was not based on any solid facts. Responding to claims by Croatian officials that Slovenia was abusing its position as EU chair to solve its problems with neighboring countries, he stressed that Slovenia could not neglect its national interests just because it was presiding over the EU.
