The explosion occurred on Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu district, which is one of the main streets.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that six people were killed in the explosion.
A large number of medical and police teams were sent to this part of the city.
As reported by Hurriyet, according to what could be heard from the fire station radio, there are many injured on the spot. DHA (Demirören Haber Ajansı) correspondent Hasan Yildrim told CNN Turkiye directly that 11 people were injured in the incident area and there was a lot of panic on the street.
CNN Special News Anchor Fulia Öztürk shared the following information live on air: "It is unknown whether it is an attack, a suicide bomber or a package bomb. It is said that many reports have arrived in this direction. The police have closed the surrounding roads around the street, civilians are prohibited from moving."
It is still unclear whether the explosion occurred in the building or on the street. As reported by the state news agency Anadolu, five prosecutors have been appointed to investigate the explosion.
Turkey's media watchdog imposed temporary restrictions on reporting on the blast, banning the use of close-up footage and photos of the blast and its aftermath.
