Human trafficking in Vojvodina

“The victims are most commonly women from poor families who were subjected to violence within their families. Their documents are taken away and many times they are threatened to be killed or thrown into the Danube River where no one will find them.” Stanojević said.

She added that the punishment for abusers and pimps is not adequate and that the police are not cooperating enough with non-governmental organisations that deal with human trafficking. 

According to Dnevnik, a safe house for mistreated women will be opened in Novi Sad in September. So far there have been charges pressed against two individuals in the region how are believed to have participated in the trafficking of ten young girls.
