Bosniak WW1 graves in Slovenia desecrated

Vandals have defaced the graves of Muslim (Bosniak) soldiers killed in World War I with Serb symbols, in a cemetery in Log Pod Mangrt.

Vandals have defaced the graves of Muslim (Bosniak) soldiers killed in World War I with Serb symbols, in a cemetery in Log Pod Mangrt. The headstones of the Bosniak soldiers, who fought in the Austrian army during the First World War and were killed on the Soca front, were defaced with the Serb symbol of four “s” letters, Slovenian internet portal 24ur.com reports. Community Secretary Nizet Poric has reacted angrily to this act of vandalism. "That’s first-class vandalism. I think that what happened there was right out of order,” Poric told the portal. The local police station in Bovec has also been informed about the incident and an investigation is still ongoing. The cemetery is the last resting place of Bosniak soldiers who fought in the Austrian army during the First World War and were killed in battles in 1916. Their bodies were buried in accordance with Islamic custom. During the1930s, the Italian authorities replaced Muslim headstones with iron crosses. The Islamic Community in Slovenia, in association with the Cultural Heritage Protection Office in Nova Gorica, nonetheless managed to restore the Muslim symbols to the headstones last August. The portal states that during the First World War, Log Pod Mangrt was home to the only mosque in Slovenia, which was built by Bosniak soldiers themselves in 1916, during the hostilities on the Soca front. The mosque was demolished after the war. It is still unknown whether this was done by Italians or Slovenes, who needed the construction material.
