Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic is not involved in any secret talks about the formation of a new government on behalf of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS). This was announced by the president's press service on Tuesday. Nikolic denies involvement in talks on behalf of SNS After he won in the presidential runoff on May 20, Nikolic fulfilled one of his campaign promises and stepped down as SNS leader. The statement on Tuesday dismissed as false media speculations, adding that they were "an attempt at discrediting the president for the sake of cheap sensationalism and thus ridiculing his efforts aimed at ensuring that Serbia gets a new government as soon as possible". The press service specified that in view of the government formation talks, Nikolic met and talked with representatives of the SNS on June 4, the Democratic Party (DS) on June 6, and the coalition comprised of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS)- Party of United Pensioners of Serbia (PUPS) - United Serbia (JS) on June 11. The release adds that the public was duly informed about these consultations.. "Therefore, any speculation about some 'secret talks' must be discarded as complete fabrication; not to mention the fact that these speculations are often backed by 'well-informed sources' or 'sources who preffered to remain anonymous' or 'sources close to the president' always without a name and surname," the release underlines. Nikolic believes that a speedy formation of a new government is a priority, and he made that clear on numerous occasions, stressing that Serbia and its citizens have no time to waste, and that its institutions should tackle the accumulated economic and social problems facing the society as soon as possible, his press service said.
