A hardline Muslim suspected of collaborating with al-Qaida says he has assumed leadership of Somalia's opposition. Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys says he deposed the former chairman, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, because Ahmed signed a UN-brokered peace deal with the Somali government last month. Aweys said that the opposition decided to remove Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed as chairman "because of his misuse of the leadership. From now on I will be the leader."
