The Women and Mothers of the Srebrenica and Zepa enclaves have condemned the fact that the perpetrators of the Srebrenica genocide have yet to be punished. NGO activist Sabra Kolenovic told a seminar entitled “War Crimes, Genocide and Memories” in Dubrovnik that it was very hard for her to walk through Srebrenica and see people who she knew played a role in the 1995 massacre, at liberty. “Srebrenica perpetrators still free” “There are so many criminals walking freely in Srebrenica, who should have been serving their sentences a long time ago,” said Kolenovic, who lost a number of male relatives in the massacre. She added that she was not surprised by the fact that the war criminals had not been punished. “If Karadzic and Mladic have not been arrested, why would they arrest those who played a lesser role?” she stated, adding that if the crimes were left unpunished, they could happen again. Hatidza Mehmedovic, who lost the entire male side of her family, stated that the younger generation should not harbor any hate, because “evil spreads like weeds.” She criticized the role of the United Nations and the Dutch UN battalion during the Srebrenica genocide, reiterating that the organization had launched legal proceedings against the Dutch government. Mehmedovic said that she would never recognize the Republic of Srpska, stating that it was an entity created “on blood and genocide.”
