Jovica Stanisic’s trial at the Hague for war crimes committed in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina has been adjourned yet again. The trial chamber presided by Judge Patrick Robinson held a 10-minute-long session behind closed doors. Ex-state security chief’s trial adjourned again Stanisic’s trial had been adjourned earlier and was due to resume yesterday, after doctors decided on May 8 that his health was too poor for him to be able to follow proceedings in court or via video link from his cell. The doctor’s report stated that Stanisic was still “very weak” and that he had digestive problems that had caused him to lose a “significant amount of blood.” The former state security chief and his deputy Franko Simatovic are accused of committing atrocities against non-Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1991and 1995. After four adjournments due to Stanisic’s health, the trial chamber decided to start the trial on May 2, when Stanisic was given the opportunity to follow the trial via video link from his cell. Stanisic’s defense team claimed that proceeding with the trial in the absence of the accused contravened the Hague Tribunal’s penal code. According to doctors, Stanisic is also suffering from severe depression, chronic digestive problems, and kidney stones.
