"We consider that this will be a more successful nomination," Borisov told his cabinet.

Georgieva is "a powerful deputy president of the European Commission responsible for the bloc's budget," Reuters said in its report.

There had been media reports earlier this month that Bulgaria planned to nominate Georgieva instead of Bokova, which Borisov then denied.

Bulgarian media also speculated that "Moscow was involved in the game around replacing the country's candidate," which Russia has denied, Tanjug is reporting on Tuesday.

Russian MFA spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel, during the recent G20 summit in China, tried to talk to Russian leaders about their support to a Bulgarian candidate - "but not the one who has been officially nominated "- i.e., at the time, Bokova.

TASS reported that Moscow then made it clear to Merkel that "any direct or indirect attempt to influence Bulgaria was unacceptable."

Berlin later responded by accusing Moscow of making "false accusations."
