Turks want to establish safe zone - inside Syria

Turkey has been attacking Kurdish forces in northern Syria this week in an attempt to prevent them from taking the town.

"What we want is to create a secure strip, including Azaz, ten kilometers deep inside Syria and this zone should be free from clashes," Akdogan told Turkey's AHaber TV, according to Reuters.

Previously, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said that his country "would not allow" the loss of control over Azaz, located five kilometers from the Turkish-Syrian border and 30 kilometers from Aleppo - a former jihadi stronghold which is now largely in the hands of forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar el Assad.

Meanwhile in New York, current UN Security Council President Venezuelan Ambassador Rafael Ramirez said all members "expressed concern" about Turkey's artillery attack on Kurds, and urged Ankara to respect international law. However, no official statement has been issued.

Previously, U.S. and France - allies of Turkey in NATO - as well as the Syrian government and the Russian Federation, all condemned the Turkish attacks on Kurds.
