Nikolic lays wreath at memorial to genocide victims
Nikolic was heading the central state ceremony commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day.On behalf of the Serbian parliament, Speaker Maja Gojkovic also laid a wreath and Minister of Labor and Veteran and Social Affairs Aleksandar Vulin and Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic did the same on behalf of the Serbian government.
The ceremony was also attended by Holocaust survivors and their descendants, former WWII death camp prisoners, representatives of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Serbia, the head of the Roma National Minority Council, government ministers and parliamentary officials, the president of the Belgrade city assembly, foreign diplomats and others.
The Holocaust must not be forgotten because it is a crime to forget a crime, Tomislav Nikolic said in his address during the ceremony.
"Some would want us to commit that crime - to consign the Holocaust to oblivion, or, what is even worse, remember it in a superficial and wrong way," he said.
"Through cognition of history in all its cruelty, we must be reminded constantly in order to keep history from repeating itself in another place or form. Only then will the Holocaust be in the consciousness of all nations," Nikolic said.
"Citizens across Serbia were helping the persecuted Jews," the president stated, noting that, in a new way, today's generations must be made aware of the "suffering of Jews, Serbs, Roma and people of other nationalities, and of all fatal aspects of the Nazi ideology."
