Serbia sends protest note to UN over Pristina's presence

The Serbian UN mission has sent a protest note to the international organization over the presence of representatives of Kosovo at a conference on terrorism.

Serbia sends protest note to UN over Pristina's presence

According to Serbia's state broadcaster RTS, the Serbian mission sent the protest note "in agreement with (Foreign Minister) Ivica Dacic," while UN representatives have said that the counter-terrorism gathering was "a private meeting organized by the U.S. and that is why Kosovo was treated as an independent state."

RTS said that "many noticed that the gathering was secured by the secret American police, not the UN police, which is also unusual."

Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin "complained about the presence of Kosovo representatives," Reuters reported, saying they were sitting in the hall with UN members, and that this was "not correct."

"To hold such meetings on UN premises means they have no respect for the UN. It is beyond UN rules," said Churkin, adding that the Americans by inviting Pristina "showed that in this building, everything is under Barack Obama's command."

Kosovo is Serbia's southern province where ethnic Albanians in early 2008 unilaterally declared independence. Serbia considers the proclamation a violation of its Constitution and territorial integrity. Kosovo is not a UN member.
