Big wave of refugees expected in Serbia during Monday

At the same time, Macedonian authorities said that over 6,000 refugees had entered the country in the previous 24 hours. Two thirds of them took trains, while the rest are traveling to the Serbian border in the north "on their own."

The refugees our reporter spoke to said they were "tired, running away from the war in Syria, and only wished to pass through Hungary and not remain there."

They also said they were "not interested" in that country's stricter laws that will come into force on Tuesday, "and are not afraid of getting arrested."

Hungary's announced new measures are the reason for the increased number of refugees that have been taking the so-called Western Balkans route in the past days, as they travel from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa to Western Europe.

Anyone caught illegally crossing Hungary's border will, starting tomorrow, be sent to jail. Hungarian authorities on Monday deployed soldiers and armored vehicles to the country's southern border with Serbia.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban told the troops and the extra police sent to the area they will be "defending Europe, Hungary, and our way of life."
