Serbian MP elected PACE rapporteur for Turkey

Natasa Vuckovic was on Thursday elected by the PACE Monitoring Committee as the rapporteur for Turkey, the Serbian parliament said.

Serbian MP elected PACE rapporteur for Turkey

"Turkey is a significant Council of Europe member state and it is facing difficult challenges due to the situation in Syria and the Middle East and the large number of refugees in its territory. It is the largest Muslim country in the organisation and it is very important that it preserves democracy, the rule of law and human rights. That is the mission of the Council of Europe," Vuckovic noted.

Turkey has been in the post-monitoring stage since 2004 and the same form of supervision is also in place for Bulgaria and Macedonia.

The duty of the rapporteur is to prepare periodic reports on the progress achieved by a member state in meeting the obligations undertaken by becoming a Council of Europe member, the statement said.
