"Effective measures" urged against domestic violence

"Just a few days ago seven women have been murdered by their partners, adding to the 19 who already died since the beginning of this year as a result of domestic violence. This almost equals the number of women murdered in 2014," the post said, and added:

"It is urgent to stop this phenomenon. The Serbian parliament's emergency meeting on Tuesday is a first step in the right direction. The government, parliament, the judiciary and law enforcement bodies, must all implement effective measures to stem this scourge. The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence must be fully and effectively implemented and serve as a guidance for such policies."

Muiznieks also announced that he would "issue specific recommendations in my upcoming report on Serbia," noting that violence against women is one of the most abject and widespread human rights violations.

"Eliminating it must be a priority for us all," concluded the CoE official.
