Croatia's ambassador will return to Belgrade from his consultations in Zagreb "immediately after Easter," it has been announced.

Croatian ambassador to return to Belgrade "after Easter"

Gordan Markotic was recalled to Zagreb because SRS leader Vojislav Seselj SRS on Wednesday set a Croatian flag on fire.

Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic informed her Serbian colleague Ivica Dacic about the date of Matkovic's return in a telephone conversation in which they agreed that "incidents must not endanger the mutual desire to improve relations between the two countries."

According to the announcement, the two foreign ministers stated that work should be done "to normalize the situation in the interest of the future of the two countries."

"The common goal of Serbia and Croatia must be to resolve through dialogue all outstanding issues from the past and to define common interests and projects for the future," said a statement issued by the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, Vesna Pusic explained that the decision to lodge a protest and recall the ambassador was "for the most part" caused by Serbian Labor Minister Aleksandar Vulin's "inappropriate statements" in response to Croatian PM Zoran Milanovic - and then also because Seselj set a Croatian flag on fire.

Pusic observed that Croatia's focus of interest was "on future relations between Zagreb and Belgrade," and that she thought Aleksandar Vucic's statement meant that Serbia, too, has recognized that "relations should be calmed down."
