PM: State will withdraw from media ownership

"Now I see there's pressure, everyone wants the state to remain in the media. Because they are not capable of going to market. Well, I don't care. Everyone, to the private sector," Vučić said.

When asked about a recent statement from his ruling Serb Progressive Party (SNS) criticizing the reporting of the state-run broadcaster RTS on the day when his cabinet was elected, Vučić said that the day to issue the statement was "chosen very stupidly.".

"On the day I gave my expose (in parliament) it was pointless to issue any statement. I spoke with people from the (SNS) information service afterwards and said that. I understand them, but then the media made it look like it was who knows what," Vučić said.

He then added that his was the only government "that did not replace a single RTS journalist, a single editor," and was therefore "the most fair authority in a most fair relationship."

"I urge and beg that their critical mood continues, because it makes us better. As for my party, we will also be taking care of the kind of statements we send out and I do not think that there were any threats there, any threatening of the freedom of the media," Vučić said.
