German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the crisis over Ukraine should be solved by political means, without imposing economic sanctions on Russia.

Merkel hopes sanctions against Russia will be "avoided"

According to this, Merkel spoke after her meeting with the president of South Korea.

"I hope that we will be able to avoid them," she said, adding that she had no interest in an escalation but was rather working to de-escalate the situation.

German experts, meanwhile, say that economic sanctions against Russia could adversely affect the German economy.

German-Russian trade exchange in 2013 reached EUR 76 billion, about 6,000 German companies are doing business in Russia, the total volume of their investments is EUR 20 billion, and 300,000 jobs in Germany depends on economic relations between the two countries, the news agency reported.
