He added that the holiday is especially important at this moment, as Greece is emerging out of the economic crisis after several years of struggle and it now sees the light at the end of the tunnel.

The reception at Belgrade's Old Palace was attended by several hundred invitees, including Serbian Orthodox Church Patriarch Irinej, representatives of the Serbian authorities, diplomatic corps and cultural and public life of Serbia.

Greece is celebrating 193 years since the beginning of the War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution, that it waged against the Ottoman Empire, which ended in founding the modern Greek state.

During the reception, Ambassador Economides also commented on the recent elections in Serbia, saying he believed the new Serbian government will be formed very soon and demonstrate that it is up to the big task of implementing reforms, solving economic problems and continuing on the path towards the EU.

"I am certain that the new government will be formed very soon. It will face a big task - it needs to implement reforms and solve economic issues, but I am confident that the new government will do well," Economides said.

He added that "the path towards the EU is also very important," urging Serbia "to continue the good work."

The ambassador congratulated Serbia on the recent elections, which he said proceeded "excellently."
