CeSID: Progressives in landslide victory

The Center for Free Elections and Democracy has projected that the Progressives (SNS) have won 48.8% of the votes cast in Sunday's parliamentary elections.

The same unofficial, early results suggest that Ivica Dačić's Socialists (SPS) would win 14 percent of the vote and 45 parliament mandates, and that the Democratic Party (DS), the New Democratic Party (NDS) - along with parties of national minorities - will be the only other parties to cross the five-percent threshold.

Currently, estimates are that the DS will have 19 MPs (5.9 percent of the vote), and the NDS 18 (5.7 percent)

The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) currently has 4.1 percent "and could still win seats in Serbia's parliament," CeSID said.

Parties of national minorities would get a total of 11 seats, according to this.

All others, including the Liberal-Democrats (LDP) and the United Regions of Serbia (URS) will not cross the threshold and will have no MPs, according to CeSID's estimate.

At least 126 votes will be needed in the new parliament for the country's next government to be elected.

Serbians on Sunday chose the country's new parliament, while residents of Belgrade and several other towns voted to elect local assemblies in early elections.

6,765,998 citizens were eligible to vote, and did so at 8,262 polling stations in central Serbia and Vojvodina, 90 in Kosovo, and 35 abroad.

The polling stations opened at 07:00 CET and closed at 20:00 CET.

According to CeSID, the turnout stood at 50.3 percent at 19:00 CET - 3.3 percent less than two years ago.

The ballot papers included 19 lists of parties, coalitions and citizen groups, seven representing ethnic minorities, while a total of 3,020 candidates were running for MP seats.
