Director of state broadcaster RTS dies suddenly

Aleksandar Tijanić, general director of Serbia’s public broadcaster Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), died in Belgrade on Monday evening.

BELGRADE Aleksandar Tijanic, general director of Serbia’s public broadcaster Radio Television of Serbia (RTS), died in Belgrade on Monday evening. He passed away after collapsing at the entrance to the residential building in where he lived. Director of state broadcaster RTS dies suddenly Nada Macura, a spokesperson for the Emergency Medical Services, said that Tijanic was found unconscious, and that all attempt to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Macura did not reveal the cause of death. Tijanic, one of the region's best-known journalist, was born 64 years ago in Djakovica and began his career as a journalist in the Belgrade weekly NIN. After building a career in the print media in Serbia and other Yugoslav republics during the 1980’s, Tijanic continued as an executive at several television stations, including TV Politika and BK TV. Starting in 1994, he served as information minister in the cabinet led by Mirko Marjanovic, and remained in that office for two years. In January 2001, he took over as an adviser to Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica. In March 2004, Tijanic was appointed director-general of the Radio-Television of Serbia (RTS), and was reappointed to that position in 2010. Tijanic is survived by his wife and their two children. Nada Macura, a spokesperson for the Emergency Medical Services, said that Tijanić was found unconscious, and that all attempt to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Macura did not reveal the cause of death.

Tijanić, one of the region's best-known journalist, was born 64 years ago in Đakovica and began his career as a journalist in the Belgrade weekly NIN.

After building a career in the print media in Serbia and other Yugoslav republics during the 1980’s, Tijanić continued as an executive at several television stations, including TV Politika and BK TV.

Starting in 1994, he served as information minister in the cabinet led by Mirko Marjanović, and remained in that office for two years.

In January 2001, he took over as an adviser to Yugoslav President Vojislav Koštunica.

In March 2004, Tijanić was appointed director-general of the Radio-Television of Serbia (RTS), and was reappointed to that position in 2010.

Tijanić is survived by his wife and their two children.
