"Prosecutor to appeal against acquittal of ex-KLA"

BELGRADE EULEX Prosecutor Maurizio Salustro announced on Tuesday evening that he will lodge an appeal against the release of former KLA member Fatmir Limaj. Limaj, who was after the war in Kosovo a minister in the government in Pristina, and a group of others were on trial for war crimes committed in the Klecka case. "Prosecutor to appeal against acquittal of ex-KLA" The prosecutor said he would appeal the verdict once he receives a written judgment. "The prosecution believes that the evidence that has been gathered during the main trial are more than enough to prove the guilt of the suspects and for the reason I will lodge an appeal against the decision," reads Salustro's statement as reported by Pristina-based media. Tanjug said that "the information was confirmed by the lawyers of the defendants, while EULEX released no comments." "We cannot confirm anything," the EU mission's media office was quoted as saying. On September 17, the Basic Court in Pristina acquitted Limaj, an ethnic Albanian, of all charges of participation in the torture of Serb and Albanian civilians and Serbian troops and police officers at a prison camp in Klecka in the municipality of Lipljan due to a lack of evidence. Besides Limaj, nine more accused were also cleared of charges. The Serbian Government Office for Kosovo on Wednesday said it "welcomed the decision of EULEX's public prosecutor." "We expect that the retrial will determine who committed the crime against Serb civilians in the village of Klecka 15 years ago and that the criminals will finally have names.
