THE HAGUE Former political leader of Serbs in Bosnia Radovan Karadzic on Monday requested a new trial before the Hague Tribunal He said that prosecutors failed to disclose evidence favorable to his case. Hague: Radovan Karadzic requests new trial By the beginning of the trial in October 2009, the Hague forwarded to Karadzic 1,625 testimonies and witnesses' statements on a total of 224,448 pages, but failed to present him with 406 more documents of the kind. This amounts to incredible 25 percent of evidence, reads the document that Karadzic filed before the court. Noting that such shortcomings continued through the trial, Karadzic recalled that the Trial Chamber have pointed out for 58 times that the prosecution has not met its responsibilities. The extent of violation of obligations relating to filing evidence in Karadzic's case has no precedent in the history of the international criminal law, he said. For this reason, Karadzic asked from the Trial Chamber to approve a new trial due to numerous violations of the prosecution's responsibility to present evidence. When the obligation to present evidence is not fulfilled, the trial cannot be successful, and the trial chamber should therefore order a new, fair trial, the Hague indictee concluded. Karadzic is facing charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for his role in Bosnia's 1992-95 war. He was arrested in July 2008, and extradited to the Hague after 13 years at large. Karadzic's trial was launched on October 16, 2009, and the prosecution finished interrogating witnesses in May, 2012. The beginning of the defense evidence presentation in Karadzic's case was scheduled for October 16. Radovan Karadzic (FoNet, file) Tanjug
