“EU will condition Serbia’s accession talks date”

Serbia will probably be given a date for the EU accession talks in the end of the year but under conditions that the country will not be able to fulfill easily.

BELGRADE, BRUSSELS Serbia will probably be given a date for the EU accession talks in the end of the year but under conditions that the country will not be able to fulfill easily. This is according to an EU diplomat who insisted to remain anonymous. “EU will condition Serbia’s accession talks date” He told Tanjug that the European Council would adopt the European Commission’s recommendation from last December to give Serbia a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks. “However, a series of conditions that Serbia will have to fulfill in order for the talks to actually begin will be attached to the decision,” the source stressed and added that the majority of the conditions referred to normalization of relations with Kosovo. The European Council gave Serbia the EU candidate status in March. Tanjug’s source explained that the conditions included the implementation of the agreements that were reached in Brussels, reaching of agreements on energy and telecommunications and the beginning of a political dialogue. Serbia will also be asked to abolish some of the so-called parallel structures in northern Kosovo and make sure that KFOR and EULEX have freedom of movement north of the Ibar River. “I do not think that Serbia will manage to fulfill all that before the end of the next year,” the source pointed out. He noted that Serbia would only get a date for the beginning of the talks if the new government continued to work on internal reforms and showed political will to cooperate with Brussels on the Kosovo issue. “Otherwise, Serbia’s EU pathway could get even more complicated,” the EU diplomat said. According to him, there is a unity when it comes to conditioning of Serbia’s date for the beginning of the accession talks among the EU member states.
