University of Belgrade decided on Wednesday to award Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin a honorary doctorate. The Faculty of Law came up with the idea, and its Dean Mirko Vasiljevic stated that Putin deserved the recognition for his work in protecting international law. Belgrade University to award Putin honorary doctorate This is also a way for the university to thank a number of Russian teachers who left their mark on that institution, Vasiljevic noted, stressing that politics were not the only reason behind the decision. University Rector Branko Kovacevic remarked that the honorary doctorate should be awarded March 23, when Putin is scheduled to visit Belgrade. "Putin contributed largely to the development of international law, while in terms of domestic law, he has proven that a stable constitutional democracy is attainable," Kovacevic noted, adding that another reason for the decision was Putin's work in preserving Serbia's territorial integrity. The time and place for the ceremony will be decided March 20. Vladimir Putin will visit Belgrade for a working visit later this month.
