How to obtain Serbian citizenship

The current law states that the only two conditions needed for a Montenegrin citizen to maintain his or her Serbian citizenship are that he or she must be 18 years of age and reside in Serbia. The documents needs for obtaining citizens are: a personal identification card (from Serbia), a confirmation of residence and of current citizenship no older than six months, and a copy of one’s birth certificate.

According to the Serbian Internal Affairs Minister, there has not been any additional interest shown in receiving Serbian citizenship over the last several days, and its offices have been functioning with a usual amount of visitors.

However, numbers have gone up since last year. In 2005, about 2,000 Montenegrin citizens received Serbian citizenship, but in the first three months of this year alone, about 1,300 have applied.
