Millions needed to repair burned down Serbian church in NYC

B92.net's Filip Cukanovic visited the site and spoke with the priest in charge, Zivojin Rakocevic.

The debris has been removed, while big investment lies ahead to repair this Orthodox temple in the heart of the Big Apple.

"We plan to continue (works) in October, which means removing decorative interior stones, installing flooring, and roofing the church. We hope to be able to hold service in the church as early as next Easter," Rakocevic said.

However, this will be only the first phase, that will allow the use of the temple on big holidays. The church spreads on 1,500 square meters and requires reconstruction of three layers of stone.

Huge funds are needed for all this, with the roof alone set to cost USD 5 million. The entire cost of the works will run into "tens of millions," Rakocevic said.

"The money is coming from donations, and in part from insurance," the priest explained.

The video report below (in Serbian) shows the church as it is today, and its cross, icons and frescoes that escaped the fire undamaged.
