Government sets up Office for IT, adopts Sentinel conclusion

The task of the Office will be to consolidate state IT resources, ensure connectivity of various information systems and provide strong support and the basis for the development of Serbia's e-governance.

No additional funds from the state budget are needed for the start of the new Office's work, the government's press service announced.

The Office will also be tasked with reducing, starting from next year, "the total budget resources required for IT" - given that the state IT systems will be "consolidated and rationalized."

Another goal is to develop Serbia's own information systems that would reduce the country's dependence on "ready-made" and closed IT solutions, the statement said.

"Digitization of the state administration and providing services to citizens who will use them in an easy and fast manner is one of my priorities," Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Thursday.

The government today also passed a conclusion on the adoption of a cooperation agreement with the European Commission on access to Copernicus Program's Sentinel data.

This is is the world's largest satellite earth observation program worth nearly seven billion euros, the government announced.

"The Republic of Serbia is the only non EU-member state that has been offered free access to all data," the statement added.

According to the government, this has been achieved thanks to the Novi Sad-based Institute BioSens, that won a European Commission competition in which more than 200 registered organizations from all over Europe took part.
