The use of artificial tanning beds by minors under 18 years of age should be banned by the end of this year, the Ministry of Health has announced.

Serbia plans to ban minors from using tanning beds

The ban will be regulated through a sub-legal act, Health Ministry's State Secretary Ferenc Vicko said during a gathering to mark Euromelanoma Day - a European campaign dedicated to raising awareness and disseminating information about skin cancers.

Deputy chair of the Serbian Association of Dermatovenerologists Dusan Skiljevic says that the use of tanning beds causes melanomas found in 18 to 29-year-old patients.

There are 3,348 confirmed cases in Europe so far of melanomas caused by exposure to UV light emitted by artificial tanning devices.

A survey carried out in four Serbian high schools shows that 38 percent of students received artificial tanning treatments at least once, while some visited tanning salons as young as 13.

"About eight percent of high school students went there more than 30 times, which is a huge amount of radiation," Skiljevic said.

More than 500 people are diagnosed with melanomas in Serbia every year. In about 200 of these new patients, the cancer had already metastasized to other organs.
