Moscow reacts to reports about weapons deliveries to Croatia

It was issued in reaction to the reporting in Croatia's Vecernji List.

The ministry said that Russia adhered to its international legal obligations in relation to the UN-imposed regime of an embargo on arms deliveries to the conflict parties during the Yugoslav crisis of 1991-1995.

"It is no secret that during this period a large number of Soviet-made weapons, ammunition and military equipment were available in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in the former Soviet republics. As far as we know, dishonest Croatians dealers used this circumstance to supply Zagreb. Of course, the Russian Federation had nothing to do with this," the statement said.

Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Chepurin said that the media "spin" about the alleged delivery of a S-300 missile system to Croatia represent "a lie and a provocation."

They are aimed at harming Serbia, which is maintaining and developing its friendship with Russia, and at weakening the trust between the Serbs and Russians, he told Tanjug.

"Once again I say that Russia never delivered arms by violating international norms and the embargo on arms deliveries to the former Yugoslav countries, which was established by the UN Security Council," Chepurin said.

The Croatian media have been reporting about Russia allegedly supplying Zagreb with weapons, including an S-300, during the 1991-1995 embargo.
