Police said that the administration and police buildings in Almaty were the target of the attack and that there was an exchange of fire between the attackers and members of the security forces and the army.

Dozens of attackers have been liquidated and their identities are being established.

During the night, the army took to the streets and undertook an operation against all those who looted the city and destroyed property.
