Admiral Vyacheslav Popov, a former commander of Russia's Northern Fleet, claims Russia's Kursk nuclear submarine sank after a collision with a NATO submarine.

In an interview for the RIA News agency, Popov said that he could say the name of that NATO submarine with a probability of 90 percent, but that there was no evidence for that.According to him, the NATO submarine followed Kursk, but got too close to it.
Popov claims that the NATO submarine was also damaged in the collision with Kursk and due to the explosion of ammunition on the Russian submarine, but that, when it restarted the engine, it went to its base.
He also states that the Russian anti-submarine aviation found a foreign submarine that collided with Kursk off the coast of Norway. He pointed out that the exercises of the Northern Fleet in August 2000 also took place in neutral waters. According to some media reports, the nuclear submarines of the U.S. Navy, Memphis and Toledo, as well as the submarine Splendid of the British Navy, were in the zone where the exercise was performed at the time of the accident.
RIA News states that the News24 portal reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense asked the Pentagon to inspect the Memphis and Toledo submarines, but that the request was rejected and that the answer was that "all submarines are in good condition." The same answer was received from London, the portal reported.
Kursk sank on August 12, 2000, in the Barents Sea, 175 kilometers from the North Sea, at a depth of 108 meters. According to the official version, the accident was the result of a torpedo explosion on the submarine and the subsequent detonation of ammunition, during the exercises of the Northern Fleet. All 118 members of the submarine crew were killed.
