Soros responds to Hungarian government's "attacks"

US billionaire of Hungarian Jewish origin George Soros has responded for the first time to "Hungarian government's attacks," Reuters is reporting.

The article cites a statement issued by Soros' Open Society Foundations that said the campaign against him represented “distortions and lies designed to create a false external enemy."

It adds that Budapest was "stoking anti-Muslim sentiment and employing anti-Semitic tropes reminiscent of the 1930s."

Soros refuted Hungarian PM Viktor Orban's claim that he "called for the European Union to settle a million migrants a year and pay each of them thousands of euros."

Soros also encountered problems with the Hungarian government earlier this year over a draft law on high education that could bring into question the work of his Central European University.
