It was also stated that these results were based on the ballots that the Spanish police had failed to seize. A spokeswoman for the Catalan government said the action of the Spanish police prevented some 777,000 inhabitants of Catalonia from exercising their right.

Previously, the region's prime minister declared the victory of the independence option and stressed that it paved the path to "unanimous declaration of independence."

During the day on Sunday major unrest took place in Catalonia, with more than 800 people were injured in clashes between independence supporters and the police controlled by Madrid.

The Spanish police closed 46 polling stations, while the Civil Guard also intervened in 46 polling stations.

During the day, the Catalan police announced that it had closed 244 polling stations throughout the region, while it later announced that voting was completely prevented at 79 out of the 2,315 polling stations.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy addressed the public and stressed that "no referendum had been held" and recalled that the Constitutional Court of Spain had declared it unconstitutional.
