"Kosovo recognition would be high price" - German politician

"It is difficult to give advice, but I believe in that case, the people should decide in a referendum whether Serbia is ready to pay that price," Jongen told the daily Politika.

Commenting on objections coming from Brussels that Belgrade is not following the foreign policy course of the EU because it is refusing to join anti-Russia sanctions, the German opposition politician said:

"If I may to give advice to Serbia, I would tell it not to succumb to pressure and not to impose sanctions on Russia. Your country needs to maintain good relations with Russia and stay in that middle ground, because it is important for your economy."

Jongen added that it was important for the EU to have a bridge, such as Serbia, that connects Europe and Russia.

"It's not good to burn all bridges between Europe and Russia," he said.
