"Russian ground forces didn't help liberate Palmyra"

"We are talking about support by military aircraft, while ground forces have not taken part in any operation," confirmed the Kremlin.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov also told reporters that forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar el-Assad have taken full control of the city of Palmyra, previously held by Islamic State.

The terrorist organization seized the fortress of Palmyra in May 2015 and established control over the ancient city.

The jihadists destroyed a large part of the cultural treasures of the city, which is listed on UNESCO's world heritage list.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that the taking of Palmyra represents a success of the strategy of the Syrian army in the fight against terrorism.

In addition, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Bashar el-Assad on this development, said Peskov.
