Somalia bans Christmas

The government of Somalia has banned Christmas celebrations, warning that Christian holidays could jeopardize the Muslim faith in the country.

Somalia bans Christmas

Security agencies are now "on alert to stop any gatherings" while "foreigners are free to mark the Christian holiday in their own homes - but hotels and other public places have been prohibited from marking the day."

BBC noted in its report that "Christmas is not widely celebrated in Somalia" and that the country officially adopted Islamic Sharia law in 2009.
