The document also urges these countries to give him protection, Sputnik reported.

A plenary session in Strasbourg voted 285 to 281, calling on EU member states to "drop any criminal charges against Edward Snowden, grant him protection and consequently prevent extradition or rendition by third parties, in recognition of his status as whistle-blower and international human rights defender."

Snowden is a former U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) contractor who in 2013 released a trove of classified documents detailing bulk U.S. intelligence data collection in the United States, Europe and many other targets around the world, Sputnik said.
